Ch, Ch, Ch, changes, turn and
face the strange Ch, Ch, Ch,
changes . . .

David Bowie

The 1 385- 1 386 school year
began with a series of changes to
make St. Mary's a better place to
be. As of August 24, 1 385, the
results for a bright and soaring year
were definitely displayed on the
campus. The students came back to
find a new "Holt" known as the "St.
Many-ott, " and the remodeling of
lower Smedes in progress. Behind
some of the classroom doors, we
saw several new teachers. There
was also exciting news of new clubs
and activities to become involved in.
Furthermore, the newly formed
rules committee added some new
rules to be followed. So turn the
pages and look back on all that was
new to us this year.

GOING BACK IN TIME

Alumnae Weekend sent spirits
soaring for those who graduated in
1935, 1960, 1965, 1975, and 1980.
These special reunions were held on
April 19-20, 1985. Alumnae were
entertained by the Beacon/Circle Tea, a
Cold Cut performance, an exhibition of
"Paintings of Women," campus tours,
and a Cocktail Party. Allison Kerr, a
1975 St. Mary's graduate, entertained
on Alumnae Day as a key-note
speaker/singer whose fame is quickly
spreading as a professional singer.
Miss Kerr is a former bongo player for
Cold Cuts. Through Alumnae Weekend,
Alumnae were able to renew memories
of good times and old friends.

GRADUATION

is a sentimental event that
takes place annually for both
the college and high school
students on the front steps of
Smedes Hall. It is the day when
the results of hard work and
achievement are finally

rewarded. In addition, this
special day is a time to
reminisce about friends, happy
memories, and all that one has
learned. However, graduates
are reminded that this day is
not just another end, but rather
a milestone which should mark a
new beginning towards a
promising future.

Also, the audience had a real

to have fun, and for some, to
show a hidden and sometimes

During this special event, each
student signs the Honor Pledge.
This pledge keeps each girl on
her honor throughout the year.
The service itself is a beautiful
candle-lit service. It is held at
night and is followed by singing
of the School Hymn in the
grove. This is one of the many
occasions that makes St.
Mary's such a special place.

Parents came from all over to see how their
girls live! Suddenly everything looked so nice!
Girls with make-up; green grass — no leaves! All

A BREED ALL THEIR OWN!

Day students are a special breed of
people at St. Mary's. They are an
active and important part of life at St.
Mary's. They are like a club in that
they handle special community
projects and they also host a picnic at
the end of the yean for the whole
student body. The newly formed Day
Student club, The Spirits, says a lot
about its members. Day Students
contribute a lot to the spirit of St.
Mary's.

You need to go no farther if you want to see the

tie dye shirts, lace-up boots, Reeboks galore, dead
bracelets, Swatch Watches, long skirts, printed
shirts, and we must not forget those blue suede
clogs. In another area, personalized license plates
have become abundant and the usual stickers,

The administration, headed by President Rice, is

the school functioning smoothly. Several new
faces were to be found in the administration this
year. Dr. Elgiva Watson took the place of Dr. Miller
as Dean of the School and is performing her job
very well. Also, after a long search we located a
new chaplain. The Reverend Janet C. Watrous is

S-E-N-l-O-R-S: Seniors at Saint Mary's
are the Best! Whether a 2 year-girl, A
year-girl, graduating or not ... it was
a special year for each of us!
Fraternity parties, SGA Dances, UNC,
special friends, special events, along
with SMC traditions — Chapel
Pledges, curfews, and NO GUYS! All
of these will make a significant
impression in our memories.

To all of those who caned for us and
who have prepared us for the future
during these years — WE THANK you
as we now face the future ... at
Chapel Hill or wherever . . . We look
back at wonderful memories and
appreciation and look to the future
with anticipation and eagerness!

Good luck to all Seniors!

JUNIORS . .

JUNIORS . . . Accelerated on just a junior —

It is the junior's first year in college and a first

real time to think about how they want to

develop their future. It is a time to hope for

adventure and prosperity. They have

developed new friendships and a new life in

the St. Mary's Community. As the juniors

patiently wait for next year and their

Graduation, they are very enthusiastic about

making the year S5-86 the best year ever.

IN LOVING MEMORY
MARGARET PHELPS MATTHEWS

Margaret Phelps Matthews died in an automobile
accident on Wednesday, December 1 B, 1 985.

Margaret, 1 9, was a junior here at St. Mary's.

She will be especially missed by hen roommate, Lisa
Smith, and a special group of friends on 3rd West
Cruikshank.

Margaret holds a very special place in each of our
hearts. Because of her, doors were opened that gave
many of us new meanings of life. Our closeness will
never diminish because our thoughts of Margaret will
always bind our souls together. Even though Margaret
is no longer with us, her memory will be everlasting. We
had a friend; we had an awesome friend . . .
